The sun had started to set, giving the sky a red, orange, pink-ish shade. The only thing to break the silence was a soft breeze, forcing the leaves on the nearby trees to shake. The sky began to grow darker as the sun started to sink more and more, lower into the horizon.
He had promised he would come and take her and her little brother from this hell hole. He said he finally had enough money to raise them. She was stupid enough to believe him. Her father had promised them so much she should have known it was a lie. A small tear escaped the corner of her eye, but as fast as it had appeared she wiped it away.
The two children were sitting; back’s leaned against a red brick wall. The girl, with hair that reached down to her waist with only two pink bows on each side of her head, looked strait out to the long stretch of road ahead of them, eyes that that filled with hope as each car would appear but would fall back into sadness as soon as it sped by them. The boy just looked down at the sidewalk, his brown hair in his face, not even looking up as the cars sped by.
“He’s not coming, is he” A small voice next to her said. Another soft breeze blow by, ruffling the girl’s long blonde hair. She patted her little brother’s head “I guess not”.
She stood up slowly, as did her brother. “It’s getting cold and dark, let’s head back inside”. The boy just slowly nodded and followed her sister into the orphanage they had lived in for most of their life.
Some promises are never kept.
