So a student teacher was dismissed for discussing gay marriage in the classroom. Here's the link to the story.
In case nobody reads it, basically, a student asked the teacher if he was married. He said no and the student asked why, and the teacher said that it illegal for him to get married because he would be choosing to marry another man. And the student then asked if the teacher hanged out with guys and the teacher said yes.
I really don't see what was so bad about that, but a lot of the comments said stuff like "teachers should keep their personal lives out of the classroom." I have to agree with that one actually. The classroom is just supposed to be a place to teach and to have educated discussions, but peoples personal lives should never really be a main topic of discussion. Especially teachers. There's just a line you don't cross. Besides, in this particular case, the student is nine years old!!
But I do think that in high school, students are mature enough to handle personal discussions with teachers. Even with a sensitive topic like gay marriage. So that brings me to my question, do you think that gay marriage should be discussed in class?
I think that it depends on the class and if it's relevant to what the class is learning. Like social studies or civics & economics. I also think that if gay marriage is going to be discussed, it should be in a high school setting instead of a elementary or middle school setting. It's just totally inappropriate in my opinion to be discussing anything that pertains to homosexuality in elementary school. And I don't think most middle school students could handle a topic like gay marriage either. What do you guys think?
