In Louisiana, the months pour on about as fast as molasses from a jar. Time is definitely at hand, especially during the spring and summer. Vada Sonnier took full advantage of this, gaining herself a newfound lease on life along the way. The mandated therapy sessions once a month were turning out to be a blessing in disguise. After 5 or 6 sessions she had all but come to terms with what seemed to be her fate,as insane as it may have been. Since her evening adventure to the slave houses in early February she had yet to have another one of the 'night terrors',as her doctor called them. She was also finally starting to adjust well to her new surroundings and found herself growing more and more comfortable with her new environment.
As the autumn months crept their way in Vada began preparations for her first year of college. After doing some research online she chose a small community based institute close to home,South East Louisiana University. She had spent countless hours pondering,as well as asking advice of her family,on what she should major in. Taking every suggestion to heart and thinking it through completely, when time came to fill out the enrollment papers she was still no closer to deciding that she was when she started. By the time classes actually began she had decided upon primary education as a major, with a minor in creative writing.
On her first day of class,Vada was a semi-nervous wreck. Butterflies swirled in the pit of her stomach as she made her way through the small SELU campus and through orientation for each of her classes. So many people,so much excitement, left her feeling overwhelmed and anxious. By lunch time, she made her way to a small corner of the massive recreation room on campus and sat quietly writing in her journal,a suggestion from her doctor for releaseing tension when she felt nervous or afraid. As she sat, tapping her pen against the top of her wirebound pink notebook,a voice broke through her thoughts.
"Hi."
Vada looked up,a bit startled by how quitely the mystery person had approached.
"Oh...." she exclaimed, "Hello. You scared me. Didn't hear you walk up."
"I am so sorry sweetie. Was not my intention at all." the young man replied. "I couldn't help but notice you sitting here all alone,I wonder can I join you?"
After a few seconds,Vada recognized the young man as the one who had held the door open for her enroute to her English class earler in the day. She smiled up at him as she cleared her books from the seat beside her.
"Of course. I'dlike that." she answered. "I'm Vada."
"Jace. Nice to meet you Miss Vada." he held his hand out to hers in greeting. Reaching toward him,she felt shivers run through her spine as he gently pressed his lips to the top of her hand."Beautiful name you got. It's very fitting of you."
"What does that mean?" Vada giggled nervously as she stared into his eyes, completely entranced by them. She had never in her life seen such beauty. Looking into his eyes was like gazing directly into his soul. Her heart pounded so hard she feared he could hear the sound it made from where he sat.
Jace laughed, smiling at her with the most captivating smile she'd ever witnessed.
"What?" he shook his head playfully. "It means....a beautiful girl like you, only fitting she have a beautiful name." He looked away from her,his face growing red.
From that very moment,Vada was sold. As far as she was concerned he was the greatest man alive and nothing was going to tell her otherwise.
"So," he said, looking back in her direction, "may I ask?" he motioned toward her notebook.
"Oh....it's a journal. My doctor said I should use it to..." she cut herself short. "Um....yeah." she turned away from him feeling more than a little foolish.
"So it's like stress relief or something?" he asked. " write it all down, get it out of your head kinda deals?"
"Yes. Exactly."
"That's a great idea. I should try that." he smiled at her once again before standing up. "I'm going to grab a soda, would you like anything?"
"Um....some water would be good."
"Alright.I shall return." he laughed as he walked away.
Vada sat alone, attempting to collect her thoughs on the situation at hand. She could not seem to wrap her mind around what had just happened. "I made a complete fool of myself." she thought,"and he didn't seem to mind."
"Something has got to be wrong with him," she said to herself, "why else would he be interested in me?"
She waited almost nervously as he made his way back across the crowded room towards her and took his seat once again. He handed her a bottle of cold water and smiled.
"Thank you." she smiled at him.
"Welcome Darlin' "
Vada spent the remainder of the day on Cloud Nine. She caught herself too many times daydreaming about the man she had just met,and already grown to admire so much. Jace Bomar,a Southern Gentleman in every aspect of the word. Kind, sensitive, respectful. He was unlike any man she'd ever met. She could not keep his name out of her mind,or her mouth. As soon as she got home she started about him to anyone who would listen. Kira laughed at her younger sister as she sat at the kitchen table while Vada told of her encounter.
"Someone's got a crush!" she exclaimed, giggling at her sister.
"Oh please!" Vada harped, feeling her face grow hot as she smiled uncontrollably. "I really like him. Kira....." she sat down next to her sister, "I've never got this feeling from anyone before. I don't know what to do."
"Telling him would be a good start." Kira said, wrapping her arm around Vada's shoulder.
"I can't!" Vada sat up straight, "what if he's not interested?"
"Well, honey, you're not gonna know that unless you tell him now are you?"
"I HATE when you're right!" Vada grumbled, hugging Kira before getting up and heading toward the stairs to her room.

As the weeks passed,Vada and Jace grew closer and closer. The relationship between the two had bloomed into something she had never in her life imagined she could have. It was almost mindblowing to everyone in the family how quickly and easily Vada had let her guard down and opened herself up to Jace, something she had practically never done with anyone before. Growing up,Vada had few friends, none of which she concidered close. Her father always worried about her and her lack of ability to trust. Seeing her now,the way she beamed about Jace,he felt as though she was finally reaching a point in her life where she was progressing. It seemed as though every day, there was something new to talk about.
"He loves The Beatles." she would rave, 'he writes, just like I do!"
It seemed almost neverending, the girl was falling for her new friend and there was nothing she could do to stop it. So many times, she caught herself dreaming about running her fingers through his dark, curly brown hair, wrapping her arms around his neck, kissing his lips. It took every ounce of composure she could muster to restrain herself from doing so whenever he was around. Making it ever more difficult, while walking down the halls or sitting in the Rec Room on campus,Jace would hold her hand for a brief moment, brush her hair back out of her face, wrap his arm around her shoulder, little things that made her heart absolutely soar.
Something, however, felt different one early October afternoon. She and Jace sat,as usual,in the far corner of the Rec Room during their break from class, sharing a laugh and a quick bite to eat. Everything had been as usual throughout the entire lunch until right before they departed to go back to classes.
"Well," Jace said, "looks like it's that time again Vada Darlin'."
Vada looked down at her watch, nodding her head. She looked back up at Jace.
"I think you're right." she sighed. "Damn class! Always getting in the way!"
"I know!" he laughed along with her,"just doesn't seem right does it?"
"Not at all!" Vada replied, leaning down to her seat to gather her books.
As she stood back up,Jace was within inches of,his face so close to hers she was almost startled by the closeness. She jumped slightly as he reached up,laying his hand on her cheek. The warmth of his touch sent waves coursing through Vada's body. He leaned closer, pressing his lips to hers. She let her books fall back to the chair as she moved herself in closer to him. He wrapped his arm gently around her waist, pulling his chest into hers so closely she could feel his heart racing alongside her own. She felt her compsure start to slip as she gripped his arm with one hand, his shirt with the other. Feeling herself start to lose control, she pulled away from his kiss, hardly able to grasp what had just happened.
"I....." he stammered, breathlessly, "Vada Darlin' I'm sorry. I didn't mean to be so forward."
"No!" she assured him, wrapping her arm around his waist. "Jace, that was the most amazing moment of my entire life." She looked away, embarassed."There I go making a fool of myself again!" she laughed.
"You've never made a fool of yourself in front of me." he said, reaching out to run his hand through her hair. "Nothing you can say or do will ever make me think less of you."
"We'll see about that." she told him jokingly.
"Well,I'm up for the challenge Miss Sonnier. Gimme your worst!"
The two held hands on the way to the classes they were already late for, kissed briefly one more time, and parted ways.
The rest of the day was a complete blur to Vada. She could not get her mind to focus on anything other than Jace and how incredible he made her feel, moreso now than ever before. The moment of intimacy they had shared ran over and over in her mind like some sappy romance movie on repeat. Right before heading into the library for study group,Jace had pulled Vada to the side one last time, kissing her gently on the corner of her mouth, running his fingers along the curve of her face.
"Vada Darlin' " he muttered,a nervous tone to his voice, "you're birthday is coming up this week right?"
Yeah,it is." she replied,in awe that he had remembered her mentioning the fact once before, right after they had first met.
"Um..." he stopped and cleared his throat, then continued, "there's a party, this weekend. I was thinking,if you'd like to,we could go check it out."
"Jace Bomar!" Vada squealed girlishly, "Are you asking me on a date or something?" She smiled up at him, gazing deeply into his soulful eyes.
"Yes,Miss Vada! I am!" he replied back quickly, immediately hanging his head in the direction of the floor.
Vada reached out, taking his face in her hand and pulling him back to eye level with her.
"One condition." she said, her hand began to shake as her mind raced with the thought of what she was about to say. "I'll go with you on this date if..." Her words were cut short by Jace gently laying his fingertips across her lips.
"Vada Darlin',will you be my girl?" He gazed lovingly into her eyes,as though searching for an answer within them.
"Absolutely!" She replied without a moment's hesitation. "I would love that, more than anything in the world."
"You have no idea how happy you just made me!" he told her, biting his lower lip as he smiled playfully at her. "So,I'll pick you up at 7 Saturday night. Is that good?"
"Sounds perfect!"
The two parted ways,he into the library and she to her awaiting class. Her smile so bright no one could deny it. She was the happiest she had ever been in her life, and she wasn't about to let anything take it away from her.

The beaming Louisiana sun drove it's way into Vada's half-open bedroom window early Saturday morning. She stirred around for a few moments, trying to block it from her eyes in order to stay asleep, but it was to no avail.
"Dammit!" she exclaimed as she threw the bright pink comforter from where she had it pulled over her head. "Why..." she pointed toward the window and the steadily rising sun, "can't you leave me be? You see I'm trying to sleep!"
Laying back against her pillows, she looked over at the alarm clock sitting on the night table near her head.
"It's only 9." she huffed, "I still have hours to wait before tonight! How the hell and I supposed to occupy my time til then?!?"
She reluctantly climbed out of bed, dragging her way into the bathroom nearby. She brushed her teeth and hair, washed her face and changed out of her short, loose fitting nightgown and into a pair of black running shorts and a blue SELU t-shirt. After dressing, she hopped down the front stair and into the kitchen to make herself breakfast.
"Hi sweetie," Kira called to her as she entered the room. "How are you this morning? Up kinda early,it is Saturday you know." sha laughed.
Vada turned to see her sister,step-mother,and a close friend of Sheila's named Allison all sitting at the table having coffee.
"Oh I know," she said to her sibling, "the sun wouldn't let me sleep, can you believe that? The nerve!"
"Well!" Sheila exclaimed, "that's just a shame isn't it?" she laughed, her friend and daughters joining in with her.
Russell came into the room to see what all the commotion was about.
"What are you ladies laughing at?" he asked of no one in particular.
"Nothing Daddy!" Vada told him, spinning around and kissing him on his cheek before heading over to the refridgerator to get milk for her cereal.
"What's with her?" he asked, pointing toward his youngest child.
"She's got a date tonight remember?" Kira told him.
"Kira!" Vada harped, "Please....shut up. Thank you!" She laughed, tossing a dishtowel at her sister.
"Oh come on Vada, admit it," Kira antagonized, "you're wired up about going out with Jace tonight."
"So!" Vada jumped back, her face growing red. "What if I am?"
"Nothing. Just saying is all."
Vada picked up her bowl of cereal from the counter and carried it over to the table, making herself a seat beside her step-mother and sitting down.
"Where is this boy taking you again?" Russell asked.
"Daddy. I told you...a million times." Vada rolled her eyes playfully, "We're going to a party, that's all."
"What are his intentions?" Russell inquired, growing seemingly annoyed with the idea of his child and the strange young man venturing off together.
"DADDY!" Vada yelped. "Jace is a good man,he's not like that." Almost irritated with her father's line of questioning Vada rose from the table, leaving her breakfast where it sat,and headed toward the stairs to her room. "Besides,I'm eighteen years old. I can take care of myself!" She turned away, storming up the stairs.
As she was stepping through the doors back into her room, the phone rang. She hurried over to the night table and looked at the phone reciever to see who was calling.
"Jace!" She quickly picked up the phone, sat on her bed gathering her composure, then answered.
"Hello." she said in her most professional of tones.
"Hi," the voice on the other line came through, "Vada Darlin'? "
"Yes,it's me. I'm so glad you called!" she told him, laying back on her bed.
"What's wrong?" he asked,a worried tone taking over his voice.
"Oh nothing," she reassured him, "My Daddy....he's just being...." she hesitated, "overprotective, nothing new. No worries."
"He doesn't like me does he?" Jace asked.
"How can he not like you? Jace,he doesn't even know you."
"I don't know Darlin',I just...."
Vada sat up on the bed,her heart racing as anxious thoughts ran through her mind.
"Jace," she whispered, "you're having second thoughts about me aren't you?
"No!" Jace replied without a seconds hesitation. "No,Vada don't think that. I just want to make a good impression on your family,I'm nervous. That's all."
She felt her heart rate slow back to normal with the words coming from his lips throught the wire. She leaned back against the headboard of her bed, picturing him in her mind as she listened to him on the phone.
"So,are you picking me up? Or should we meet somewhere instead?" she asked him. "I mean, since my dad's being that way right now, might be best you not have to deal with him til he's in a better mood."
Jace paused for a long moment, trying to think of a solution to the prediciment at hand.
"Maybe it would be best for us to meet there." he told her. "I don't want to cause any problem with your father or anything."
"Alright,we can do that." she told him,a little reluctant but unwanting to show it. "I'll head over there at 7,like we planned. You'll be there?"
"Of course Darlin'," he assured her. "I'll be waiting for you."

Vada spent the most part of her morning avoiding her father and his increasingly annoying line of questioning. It seemed he was doing everything in his power to talk Vada out of her plans with Jace for the evening. Being the stubborn young woman she was though, she didn't let him get to her. She was going to go to that party, meet Jace, and enjoy her birthday no matter what anyone had to say about it. She just couldn't seem to figure out what it was her father had against Jace. He was the greatest guy she had ever met in her life and he made her happy, happier than she had been in so long she couldn't recall. But for some reason unapparent to anyone,Russell was not keen on the boy. Determined to shake off the bad vibes she was getting from dear old dad,and to get her hands on a little something new to wear on her date,Vada went out at around 11AM. She and her sister,step-mother,and Allison had gone out to lunch for her birthday, then headed to the mall for an afternoon of shopping. They browsed around nearly every store the giant building had to offer, searching for nothing in particular but coming out with a little bit of everything. Vada found herself the perfect outfit for her evening to come. And to make it even better,it was on clearance for next to nothing. "Woo!" she exclaimed as she left out of the store, bags in hand, "talk about birthday luck huh?" She laughed as she and her companions made their was throughout the entire complex. The journey home caused Vada to grow restless. It was close to 5PM and she found herself growing increasingly anxious about the events to come. She had a feeling deep in the pit of her soul she simply could not shake,no matter how she tried. Seeing the look on her face,Sheila turned to Vada in the car. "You're not having second thoughts are you honey?" Vada looked up to see who was speaking to her. She shook her head as she peered out the car window. "Oh no....not at all." She looked down, fumbling nervously with her hands, "I think I'm just nervous. I haven't been out yet, since we've been here. I don't really know what to expect." *************************************** Reaching out,Vada pushed back the curtain and wrapped a towel around her wet body before stepping out of the shower and onto the cold tile floor of the bathroom. She dried her skin as quickly as possible to avoid the odd chill lingering in the air as she stood alone in the small room. She stepped over to the sink, wiping the fog from the vanity mirror. Looking up at her reflection,a million different thoughts went racing through her mind. "Why do I feel so badly about this?" she asked herself. "Something doesn't feel right at all." She shook her head, laughing out loud at how foolish she was acting. "Get a grip!" she said outloud, "you're just worked up because you're nervous. You'll get over it." An image of Jace crossed her mind, her mood immediately changing to one of utter excitement at the thought of being in his arms in only a matter of time. Smiling, she threw on her robe and proceeded to blowdry her as of lately long dark hair before pulling it back into a loose ponytail. When she finished with her hair she applied the little makeup she did wear, some blush and a little eye and lip color. She examined herself in the mirror for a brief moment before heading into her bedroom to dress. The outfit she had bought earlier in the day,a fitted black tank top and pleated denim shirt, lay on her bed. She quickly pulled on the ensemble, checking herself in the mirror behind her bedroom door. Then, throwing in a few minor touches for flair, added a belt, necklace, and a few bracelets from her jewelry box on the dresser, and the new pair of shoes she'd bought to go along with her new clothes. Checking herself in the mirror once again, she sighed with anticipation. "I guess I'm ready!" she looked over at the clock on her night table. "6:30. I might as well head out!" Down the stairs and into the kitchen, she was practically floating. She stepped in to say goodbye to her family members who were all gathered in the family room. "Alright y'all. I'm leaving now!" she told them, "Don't wait up!" "You know we will!" her sister rang back. Vada laughed as she turned around and made her way out the front door and into the driveway. She climbed into the driver's seat of her dark blue 98 Honda Accord,a graduation gift from her mother, and turned on the ignition. "Alright V." she told herself, "all there is to do now is get there." She checked her mirrors and proceeded to back out of the driveway onto the main road and began her venture to the one place she longed to be more than any place else, with Jace.

After driving for nearly an hour,Vada pulled into the crowded drive surrounding a large fraternity house just off the college campus. She skimmed the whole area with her eyes, looking for some sign of Jace's car. Nothing.
"He must be running late." She sat in the driver's seat, contemplating whether or not to wait there until he arrived.
A knock on her window broke through her thoughts.
"Hey girl!"
Vada looked over to see Leondrae,a friend from her art history class, standing next to her vehicle.
"Hey!" she reliped back as she climbed out fo the car. "Glad you're here."
"You too! It's good to see you dragging your ass out of the house for a change!" Leondrae joked.
Vada blushed as she and her friend headed up toward the front porch of the old spanish inspired home that had ling since been converted to the resident party house.
"Jace." Leondrae said. "He here yet? I thought y'all were coming together."
"No." Vada turned to look across the yard once more. "We decided against coming together. My dad....long story." she shook her head. "He said he'd meet me here. He must be running late or something,I don't know." A nervous chill ran up Vada's spine as she entered the house for the first time.
If there were ever any question of the house's reputation of being the party house,it was long gone as soon as anyone stepped through the doors. Evidence of many a celebration past lingered amongst the walls up and down the hallways of the massive building. Photos of the fraternity brothers past and present hung over nearly every inch of the entire place. What seemed like hundreds of people, most of which Vada had no idea who they were, crammed themselves into the many rooms open throughout the house's bottom level. Dancing, drinking, talking, the atmosphere was almost intoxicating.
"I'm gonna go get us a drink alright!" Leondrae shouted over the music. "I'll be right back!"
Vada nodded her head, continually looking toward the direction of the door in hopes of seeing Jace coming through them. Leondrae returned a few moments later.
"Girl! I don't even know what you drink!" she laughed, handing Vada a red plastic cup. "Don't worry. Dr. Pepper. That's all."
"Thank you!" Vada laughed as she took a few sips from the cup in her hand. The cool liquid running down her throat helped to ease the knot that was slowly rising in it.
"No sign of baby boy yet?" Leondrae asked, sensing her friend's nervousness.
"No. Not yet." Vada sulked. "He'll be here soon!"
Just as the words were leaving her lips,Vada felt an arm wrap itself around her shoulders from behind. Panicked,Vada whipped around almost frenzied to see who it was. She knew it was not Jace,he would never approach her form behind in such a way knowing what she had been through in the past.
"What the f**k?" the man in question barked, more than obviously inebriated. "What's your deal?"
Vada found herself face to face with one of her classmates she was not at all pleased to see,Randy Kessler. She had had a problem with him form nearly day one upon entering SELU and it was only getting worse as time passed. His degrading and extremely vulgar comments toward her from the moment they met left a bad taste in Vada's mouth. She knew this man was nothing but trouble. His advances had been constant, even after she told him time and time again that she and Jace were exclusive. His reaction to that was always the same,
"Why deal with that prick when you can have a real man?"
Vada did everything in her power to avoid Randy at all costs, but it seemed the odds were always in his favor. Now,standing in the front corridor of the fraternity house where he lived,Vada felt more anxious than ever being near him.
"Vada!" he slurred through his words in an attempt to gain her trust for the moment, "you look good tonight baby!" He reached up,running his hand down the front of her neck and down onto her chest.
"Excuse you!" she yelled. "Don't.....don't touch me like that!" She folded her arm across her chest in an effort to cover herself from his burning eyes and wandering hands.
"C'mon baby!" he stepped closer to her, once again trying to put his arm around her neck.
"Randy please!" she said. "Just stop it. I don't know how many times I have to tell you....I'm not interested. I have a boyfriend."
Randy glared at her, anger growing to evident proportions in his glazy eyes. He reached out abruptly, grabbing hold of her arm and pulling her even closer to him.
"Randy!" she cried. "You're hurting me!" She looked around for any sign of someone willing to help her. Leondrae had vansihed, lost in the ever moving crowd of party-goers. She turned her eyes to the doors again, praying Jace would come through at that very moment.
"Look at me you dumbass b****!" Randy shook her violently to get her full attention.
"Please." she whispered, trying her hardest to hold back tears. "You're hurting me. Please let me go."
"I don't f**king care!" he howled, "I'm sick of you....your f**king 'holier than thou' attitude." He began pulling her in the direction of the stairs leading to the second floor and the brothers' rooms.
"PLEASE!" she screamed frantically.
Her cried for help went unnoticed in the massive sea of chatter and music. She fought with all of her strength, manging to break free of his grip. But her freedom was short. As soon as she broke away from him,he immediately lashed out, knocking her down on the stairs. He leaned over, pulling her to her feet once again. She stood, helpless within his grasp as he began pulling her up the stairs again. She stumbled, hoping he would just let her fall and leave her there. But despite her hopes, she felt herself being yanked up by her hair and all but dragged the rest of the way up and into a nearby empty bedroom. Once inside,he threw her to the floor and stood over her as she half lay there crying.
"Randy, please." she cried again and again. "Don't do this. PLEASE! Don't do this!"
He reached down, gripping her tightly around her throat.
"For the last time. Shut the f**k up!" his face so close to hers she could feel the heat of his breath on her skin. "You. You honestly think you can reject me? For that f*g**t ass loser you call a boyfriend?!? b**** are you f**ked in the head?" He shook her vicously, throwing her down onto the bed. "Don't you know no one rejects me?"
Vada closed here eyes, crying uncontrollably. She felt the fear rising thoughout every inch of her as she tried to block the sickening feeling sweeping over her as Randy thrust his hands under her skirt. Nothing she could do would block the pain that followed. All of his weight pressing down on her as he forced himself on her while she lay defenselessly. She turned her head as far away from him as she could, tears pouring down her cheeks.
"Why?" she cried to herself.

"Daddy." Kira said to her father as she sat at the kitchen table late one evening. "It's been three weeks. I'm worried about her. She's barely come out of her room at all and..."
"I know Kira." Russell said. "I'm worried too,but what can we do? Nothing. There's there's nothing we can do."
"What do you mean nothing?" Kira inquired, the tone in her voice elevated,"Daddy, there's got to be something."
"Kira!" Russell exclaimed. He sast down at the table and sighed, head in hands. "I don't know. I just can't believe this. I can't believe this happened to her." He shook his head as he sat, murmering to himself inaudibly.
"I'm sorry Daddy. We never should have moved." Kira apologized through the tears running down her face. "It's my fault she was ever in the situation."
Russell reached around the kitchen table, wrapping his arms around his eldest daughter and pulling her close.
"Baby,it's not your fault."
"But daddy...." Kira started.
"NO!" he demanded forcefully. "It's not your fault! It's no one's fault. But his. He did this." His word wandered off, getting lost in the sea of thoughts running through his mind.
"I told her not to go." he stated after a few moments of silence. "I told her not to go. She wouldn't listen. Wanted to be with that boy so much...and he wasn't even there for her when she needed him."
"Daddy!" Kira said, unable to grasp what her father was insinuating. "What the hell are you talking about? You can't possibly blame Jace for this?" she searched her father's face for any kinda of reaction. "Daddy?"
Vada hadn't found the strength to bring herself up and out of bed for more than a few minutes since the night of the assault. That's what the police had called it,a sexual assault. The aftermath of the horror was still a blur to her,she was in such a state of shock after it took place she couldn't even remember how she had gotten home. She did, however, remember what went on once she got there.
She stammered through the front door, her shirt torn, face bruised, crying still. Sheila and Kira had rushed to her aid, sitting her down at the bottom of the stairway while Russell called the police. Upon arrival, the officers dispatched to handle her asked so many questions she could hardly make sense of them. Her head spun at the barrage of interrogation.
"Ma'am." the younger of the two officers said. "Can you tell me who did this to you?"
"Ma'am. Are you sure?"
"Ma'am. Would you be able to identify him in a lineup?"
"Ma'am. Would like to proceed in pressing charges?"
She sat on the stairs with her head throbbing, struggling to think clearly enough to answer their inquiries. They made her go to the hospital where she was forced to undergo an invasive physical examination and submit to a 'rape kit' as they called it.
"To collect any evidence he may have left behind." the nurse had told her. "I'll be as quick as I possibly can sweetheart."
Now,weeks later, she lay in her bed clutching her pillow tightly as though her life were dependent on it. She had tried everything she possibily could to erase the terrible memories of that night, but all her efforts were in vain. Nothing would make the nightmare go away. Every time she closed her eyes, all she could see was the monster who had attacked her. His face permanently scarred in her mind. Everyone in the house had been in to check on her many times, but she simply could not bring herself out of the bed she had found the only little bit of solice she could achieve in. Jace and Leondrae both called daily in hopes of speaking with her,but she couldn't muster the strength to talk to either of them.
Had she spoken with him,Vada would have known about Jace's arrest the night of her attack. He had shown up to the fraternity house and was confronted by a distraught and crying Leondrae. She told him about the confrontation between Vada and Randy and how Randy had her trapped in the room upstairs. She had to get someone, anyone,to help her rescue her friend, but no one seemed to care. Without hesitation,Jace barreled his way up the stairs to the room, beating on the door frantically, calling Vada's name. Hearing her cries from the other side,he used every ounce of weight on his small but muscular frame and burst through the door. Once inside the room he came face to face with the man who had attacked his girlfriend. Enraged,Jace knocked Randy to the ground and promptly 'beat the s*** out of him' as a witness described it to an officer who had been dispatched to the party. During the scuffle between the two men,Vada had ran from the room, down the stairs and out into the night. Disappearing from sight.
Needless to say,Jace's mother was not exactly pleased with having to bail her son out of jail in the middle of the night, but at the same time she was filled with pride in him for defending the woman he cared so much about. She had driven down to the police station where Jace was seated in a seperate holding cell than the general population because,as the desk clerk informed her,he had once again gotten into a confrontation with Kessler when the police brought him in to the cell.
"Jace Robert." she said to him, standing next to him on the opposite side of the bars, "how many times have I told you,you have got to control that temper."
"MOM!" Jace exclaimed.
"Calm down!" she snapped back at him. "I know. I know."
Vada heard a gentle knock on her bedroom door as her sister walked into the room,a tray in hand.
"Hey sweetie. How are you feeling?" she asked her sibling lovingly.
Vada sat up in the bed, trying her best to smile for her sister.
"I'm okay. I guess."
"Are you hungry? I brought you something. Just finished cooking, still good and hot." Kira put the tray down on the bed and sat down, wrapping her arms tightly around Vada.
"Vada,I'm so sorry this happened..."
"Kira!" Vada interrupted her sister, "please, stop apologizing. This was not your fault. I told you that." Vada hated the fact that Kira felt responsible for what had happened to her, being in absolutely no way to blame.
Vada sat up straight, pulling the tray Kira had brought up into her lap. On the plate her favorite, chicken spaghetti,Sheila's specialty.
"Thank you!" she said, kissing her sister on the cheek before taking her first bite. She and Kira sat, talking about nothing in particular,as she ate. She was more than grateful for the company of her sister at that moment. All the time alone in the dark room ahd her thinking things she had hoped would never cross her mind again, things that hadn't crossed he mind in years.
When she finished eating,Kira got up to take the tray back to the kitchen.
"Vada sweetie," she stopped at the door, "why don't you go take a hot bath? Try to relax. I think it'll help."
"That's a good idea. I'm gonna do that."
As the batchtub filled,Vada lit a few armomatic candles she had set up on the sink. Her plan was to do just as her sister had suggested, relax. Unfortunately, relaxation was nothing more than wishful thinking. The warm water of the bath felt good against her still tender skin, but it did nothing to alleviate the tension that had wrapped itself around every muscle and bone in her body. She party lay in the tub, staring blankly at the dancing flame of one of the candles as it's sweet scent filled the room. Vada slid down, slipping her head under the water. For a split second, she concidered not coming back up. Reluctantly, feeling increasingly foolish of herself for allowing such thought to cross her mind, she sat up taking in a lung-full of the raspberry scented air.
She got up,stepping out of the water and towelling off to put on her robe. For some reason, she just could not shake the that terrible thoought that had been creeping it's way throughout her every thought lately.
"I'm better off dead now." she had thought to herself so many times she'd lost count. It terrified her,how easily those feelings had come in and reseated themselves in her mind. After everything she'd gone through in the past, the vow she made to herself to never think of it again, there it was.
She could not look at her reflection in the mirror without seeing the now faded bruises Randy Kessler had left across her face. She tried to counter the awful thoughts with those of Jace, but every time she pictured his beautiful face the same thing came to mind,
"Why the hell would he want me now? I'm damaged. No good."

Vada wiped tears from her eyes as she headed back to her room after her bath. Closing the door behind her,she ventured across the room and to the closet. She opened the top drawer of the built in chifforobe and pulled out a white tank top and a pair of pink boxer shorts. She removed her robe, put on her clothes, and turn back to her room with every intention of crawling back into her bed and sleeping for a year. As she was stepping out of the closet, the strange compulsion that had pulled her up the dark, damp stairs to the attic was calling her once again.
As with the previous ventures,Vada could not fight the urge taking over her. She grabbed an SELU sweatshirt from atop the chifforobe and and put it on as she headed up the stairs. As usual, the attic was unseasonably cold. The early November weather outside seemed to do nothing to affect the climate inside the dank room. She stood by the doorway, looking around the attic she had developed an odd love/hate realtionship with. From where she stood, the cluster of old furniture she had once explored seemed miles away. The moonlight creeping in from the six windows cast eerie shadows across the floor.
Vada found herself following one of the dancing shadows to the largest of the three windows on the wall facing the backyard. She wandered seemingly aimlessly, standing directly across from the spot where Lucinda had met her end all those years before. She stopped for a moment, hovering over the area and muttering a prayer for Lucinda's sake before she turned away and continued walking toward the back side of the house. Once she got right up to the window, she peered out toward the slave houses in the distance. She found herself thinking of Lucinda, the image of her and her family vivdly emblazoned in her mind. The tears streamed down her face as she the loving husband and son Lucinda had been ripped away from entirely too soon. It tore her heart out,the prospect of a family,a family of her own. Something she felt deep down she would never have. After all the years of wear, she felt as though her own mind and heart had finally given up on her. She could hardly stand the thought of living with herself, how on Earth could anyone else be expected to. A woman so terrible distressed and destroyed, she hardly felt worthy of having someone to share her life with.
She reached out, touching the cool panes of the window. Pressing her forehead up against the glass, she ran her fingers along the window's latch. The thought crossed her mind once again as she unhinged the ancient latch, opening the window.
"I really would be better off. So would everyone else." she though to herself, despite trying so desperately not to. "I'm never gonna get over this." She fell to her knees, shaking and sobbing uncontrollably. Once again, she prayed. This time for herself. For the first time in a long time,Vada put her fate in the hands of someone other than herself. She lay her head on the window ledge, the winter breeze brushing slowly through her still damp hair.
For nearly an hour,Vada sat, fighting back and forth with herself. She'd tried everything to flush the thoughts from her mind. She thought of her family, her friends, anything to stay positive. But for every positive, the negatives seemed to greatly outweigh.
"Why do I even bother?" she asked herself, frustrated and confused. "What the f**k is the point? Why not just get it over with....." She started to stand, her knees buckling beneath her. She fell back to the floor where she rolled over onto her back, covered her face, and cried relentlessly.
For what seemed like ages, she lay on the floor, wishing to drown in her own tears. A sudden calm passed over her as she moved her hands away from her face. She looked up to see Lucinda staring down at her. Vada backed away frantically, trying desperately to scream, but no sounds passed her lips. With her back against the wall,Vada tried with all her might to make the apparition go away, but to no avail.
Lucinda crouched down next to Vada, looking at her with a sweet sadness in her eyes. Tears streamed down her beautifully weathered face and onto her dress. Looking deeper into her eyes Vada realized,
"She's crying.....for me."
The two women sat for what felt like an eternity, reading into each others eyes. It was as if,in some strange way, they were both stuck. Trapped in an undeserved and most unfortunate situation.
Vada abruptly turned away, scolding herself for allowing such and incredibly stupid notion to cross her mind.
"How could we possibly have anything in common?" she inquired of Lucinda, "you had so much to live for, your life was stolen. I have nothing to live for,yet I sit here breathing."
Lucinda shook her head, wanting desperately to to speak but could not.
"You had a family," Vada continued, "A husband who loved you more than life,a beautiful little boy who thought the world of you. I have......a father who thinks I'm crazy. A sister who cries herself to sleep at night because she can't help me get better. How could you possibly think you and I are anything alike?"
Vada searched Lucinda's face for some sort of answer. Unable to fight what she sought,Vada looked away in disgust.
Just as Vada looked away,Lucinda moved closer.
"What the f**k are you doing?" Vada asked, suddenly frightened by Lucinda's advances. Lucinda looked away in shame. After a moment's hesitation she looked back, almost angrily. She glared at Vada, mouth clenched shut, eyes burning. She abruptly reached out, grabbing Vada as before. This time her touch was different. The fire went racing through her veins as before, emination from Lucinda's hands on her face and stomach. But the vision, the vision itself was something unexpected and much easier for Vada to handle than the pervious had been. Though it only lasted a split second,it told so much.

Vada sat nervously in the waiting room outside the clinic. She hadn't yet informed anyone of her suspicions brought on by the last encounter with Lucinda, she vowed not to say a word until she knew for sure. A million and one thoughts raced through her head as she sat by herself in the semi-empty room,no one around but the receptionist behind the desk and one other woman waiting with her husband. She wondered how,if it came to be true, she was going to tell her family. How will her father feel about it? Will her sister be willing to give her advice? Should she call her mother and tell her the news? And most importantly...how will Jace react? "Who am I kidding?" she thought to herself, "I know exactly what he's going to think. He'll never want to see me again. Not that I would blame him." She sighed aloud as she sulked back into the hard plastic chair and stared blankly at the television across the room. The fast-moving images of the cartoon playing on the screen all became a swirl of color as she found herself drifting away from reality and once again losing herself in thought. A sharp tap on her shoulder jerked her back from her disassociative state. "Miss Sonnier?" Vada looked up to see a nurse standing nearby. "Yes,that's me." "The doctor will see you now." "Oh good. Thank you." Vada gathered her purse from the seat next to her and made her way down the long corridor to the examination room at the end of the hall where the doctor was waiting for her. Her heart pounded in her chest, her footsteps echoed down the empty hall. She stepped into the room and a sense of panic washed over her. "Oh God." she thought, "what do I do now? Please let it be a mistake. I can't do this alone." She sat up on the examination table, the same one she had been seated on a few days earlier. Dr. Harris,a young man of about thrity with a quick whit and somewhat dry humor, came into the room after a few moments, closing the door behind him. "Well Miss Vada," he said as he seated himself in a chair adjacent to her, "I have the results of your test." Vada fumbled nervously with her hands as she stared at the floor, almost afraid to look the man in his face. Sensing her nervousness,Dr. Harris placed his hand on hers and gently squeezed it. "It's okay honey. I know this is hard." He looked into her chart, pulling out a sheet of paper and handing it to her. "And it will only get harder. But I want you to know there is always someone to help. Even if you can't get support from your family. I can give you contacts to a number of organizations in the area that will be more than happy to offer you assistance if you need it. You're going to make it through this. It's not the end of your life.....it's just the beginning, for yourself as well as..." He motioned in the direction of her stomach. She looked up from the paper in her hands, the word POSITIVE burned in her mind. "I don't know if I can do this." she said, her voice tiny and almost unrecognizable to even herself. "How am I supposed to tell them? How do I make him understand?" "Vada, the only advice I can give you in that sense is to just be honest. Be direct,it's the best way to do it." Dr. Harris once again took her shaking hand in his. "Yes,people are going to be shocked, that is inevitable, but these people love you and they will understand what's going on. This happened for a reason, you just have to find out what that reason is." He stood up,placing his arm around her shoulder as he helped her off the table. "And as for your boyfriend,if he loves you as much as you love him, this isn't going to hurt your relationship at all." "Thank you Dr. Harris." Vada said, shaking his hand as the made their way into the hallway. "I'm gonna do it,just like you said. Be direct. What's the worst that can happen." ********************************************* Later that day the entire household was beaming over Vada's news. She had been so nervous on the drive home, trying to figure out exactly what to say, that when the time came to tell everyone she just blurted it right out. "I'm pregnant." From that moment on everyone was abuzz,Sheila calling it a "blessing in disguise",everyone agreeing fully. Talk for the rest of the day centered around Vada and the new baby on the way into the family. There was so much to be done. Russell and Clarke began making plans to convert one of the spare rooms across the hall from Vada's into the nursery,Vada and Sheila began the discussion of baby names and what they thought the sex of the baby would be,Kira made sure her sister was comfortable and feeling well. "Are you feeling alright? Are you hungry or anything?" she'd asked repeatedly. "Kira," Vada told her, "I'm fine. I feel really good right now,I do. Don't worry so much." The more she thought about it the more she realized,Sheila was right. This pregnancy was a blessing. God giving her another chance. She had never felt so grateful for anything in her life. Had it not been for Lucinda, she would have thrown the blessing away and never even known. It struck her as funny how something that brought so much fear into her life was now bringing so much happiness. Happiness she had been in desperate need of. Concidering how her day had started,a nervous wreck,it was ending quite well. To make matters even better than they already were, the phone rang right around dinner time. Sheila stepped away from the stove and picked up the cordless handset hear the doorway fo the kitchen. "Vada." Sheila called into the family room from the dining room. "It's for you sweetie,Jace." Her heart jumped into her throat. Just the sound of his name brought butterflies to her stomach. "What do I say?" she asked herself. She had rehearsed so many times and now she couldn't remember for the life of her what to say to him. "Think Vada, think." She took the phone from her step-mother and went back into the family room, sitting herself down on the couch. "Hello," she cleared her throat in an attempt to make the lump go away. "Vada Darlin'?" "Jace," she tried not to sound too excited as the sound of his voice poured across the line like the most beautiful song she'd ever heard. "I've missed you so much. It's so good to hear your voice." "Vada,I've been miserable. Worried to death about you." "I'm sorry." she began but was abruptly cut short. "There's no reason for you to be sorry. With what you went through...." he trailed off as though trying to find the words to say. "Don't be sorry Darlin'. I'm so happy to finally hear you again. I want to see you,if I'm not being too forward." "No!" she exclaimed excitedly, "You're not being forward at all. I want to see you too. I haven't seen you in so long. Would you like to come over? I need to talk to you about something, but not like this." "Let me go get changed and I'll be at your house within the hour,I promise." "Wonderful. I can't wait." she smiled as she said goodbye and hung up the phone. Getting up off of the couch she passed through the kitchen to drop off the phone before heading up to her room to freshen up before Jace arrived. After changing her clothes three times,Vada was finally ready. She headed back downstairs to wait for Jace's arrival. As eager as she was to see him,a part of her deep inside sat in fear of the news she had to deliver. She was unsure and frightened as to what Jace's reaction would be like when he learned of her pregnancy. The last thing in the world she wanted was to lose the man she had fallen so deeply in love with. "Vada sweetie," Clarke told her, "if he really cares about you as much as it seems like he does, something like this isn't gonna change how he feels about you." He kissed her on the top of her head then added, "besides,if it does push him away,he ain't good enough for you no how!" As he had promised, about 45 minutes later Jace Bomar pulled his black Ford pickup truck into the driveway of Sonnier-Monroe Manor. He sat for a second before climbing out of the cab and making his way to the porch to ring the doorbell. Russell Sonnier answered the door. "You must be Jace," he said, stepping aside to let the young man in the door. "You're pretty famous around here." "Really? How so?" Jace inquired. "You're all that girl talks about," Russell said in a half joking, half annoyed manner. "she would go on and on about you all the time. You've got my daughter all kinda hung up on you." Jace laughed,a little bit embarassed by what his girlfriend's father had just revealed to him. "It's nice to finally meet you Mr. Sonnier. Vada's told me so much about you." He extended his hand to Russell. The two men shook hands as they began making their way toward the family room. Jace stopped in his tracks as Vada emerged at the top of the stairs. "Jace!" she called to him. She felt as though she was floating all the way down the stairs and into his arms. His embrace was warm and tender, just what she'd been needing for so very long. He leaned in and kissed her gently on her lips. A kiss that sent sparks running rampent throughout her body. She leaned into him, hoping the kiss would never end. Finally pulling away,Jace handed her a bouquet of champagne colored roses. "If memory serves, these are your favorite right?" he asked her. "Baby! They're beautiful!" she took the flowers from his hand, examining each and every one of the blooms, "I can't believe you remembered that," she blushed. She reached up,touching his face. "Thank you." She kissed him once again then took him hand and started toward the kitchen. "C'mon,I want you to meet everyone." Within twenty minutes,Jace had completely won the affection of everyone in the house. Everyone including Russell, who was at first very skeptical of the young man and his motives with Vada. He now saw, just as everyone else did, exactly how much the boy cared for his daughter and was more than happy to have him. Kira and Sheila sat in the kitchen discussing how much they absolutely loved him. "He's so polite." Sheila said," It's not even normal for a man to be so polite. I like that." she laughed. "He's definitely one of a kind." "He makes her happy, she needs that." Kira stated. "She deserves that." Sitting comfortably on the couch beside Jace, drowning in his deep blue eyes,Vada searched for the word as well as the courage she needed in order to tell Jace about the baby she was carrying. "Vada Darlin'," he whispered in her ear, sensing her nervousness, "what are you thinking?" He gazed into her eyes, reading into them as though he was trying to reach her soul. "Well," she said, "at this very moment I'm ttrying to decide whether or not to tell you I love you." She immediately felt her face grow hot, embarassed with herself for letting that unfiltered thought pass her lips. "I can't believe I just said that." she mumbled under her breath. Jace pushed her dark hair away from her neck, kissing her gently right below her ear. "I love you Vada." He brushed his lips down her neck once again as he wrapped his arm tightly around her waist. She moaned softly with his embrace, turning her head and meeting his mouth with hers. His kiss deep and passionate, she felt herself once again being swept away by him. She wrapped her arm around the back of his head, running her fingers through his curly brown hair. Tears welled in her eyes as she reluctantly turned her face from his, preparing to give him the news that may or may not ruin the moment the two had just shared. She once again fell quiet. "Is that all?" he asked breathlessly. "What!?" she shoved him playfully," What else do you want from me? Jace Bomar, what kinda girl do you think I am?" "Nothin' V! It's just...." he paused, "I dunno,it seemed like you wanted to tell me something." He squeezed her hand in his, turning her face toward his and looking deeply into her eyes. Vada knew this was her chance,it was now or never. "Jace." she stopped to clear her throat, "I don't know....I don't know exactly how to tell you this." "Just go ahead and say it Darlin'." he replied, squeezing her hand once again. "Just tell me." "Jace," Vada prepared herself to just let it out,she looked him right in his eyes, "I'm pregnant." Tears ran down her face despite how hard she tried to fight them. "I understand if you don't want to see me anymore. I don't expect you to want to be with..." Her words were cut short by Jace's fingers pressing softly across her lips. He ran his hand gently across them to her cheek, kissing her mouth lovingly. She felt him pull his body closer to hers, wrapping one arm behind her and the other making it's way to her stomach. She reached down, laying her hand on top of his as though both were cradling the infant that lay just out of their reach. As they sat there, wrapped up in each other,a feeling of peace washed over Vada. She felt as though everything really was going to be alright.

By the time mid-April made it way around,Vada felt as though she were ready to explode. She was still a few months away from her projected due date in July, but she felt more than ready for the arrival of her son. She and Jace had spent the past few months planning and preparing to make sure everything was just perfect for the baby when he was born. One night while she slept,Jace had stayed up until nearly 4AM painting the nursery all by himself, just to surprise her.
Her belly wasn't the only thing that had grown over the passing time. Her relationship with Jace had blossomed into something beyond her wildest imagination. He was an absolute angel in every sense of the word. So loving,so helpful in every way he could be. He was more than willing to bend over backwards for her. No matter how seemingly silly her requests were,he made sure to fulfill each and every one of them.
Within a week of finding out about the pregnancy Jace had suggested the idea of staying with her at the Manor until the baby was born and she was back on her feet again. Everyone in the house agreed that it was a great idea. He moved some of his essentials into the room next to the nursery, where he had originally intended to sleep and made himself at home as much as he could. The rooming accomidations didn't last very long as planned,he found himself longing to be as close as he possibly could to Vada every moment he could. Eventually moving himself into the bedroom with her upon Kira's suggestion.
"It'll be good for the baby I think." she told him," Help the two of you bond."
Vada lay in bed,Jace gently rubbing her every growing belly affectionately.
"Hey little man," he said playfully, pressing his nose against Vada's naked stomach, "how ya doin' in there munchkin?"
Vada giggled, her belly shaking softly under Jace's head.
"Baby,he loves you," she said, stroking her boyfriend's curls, "he's never this calm for anyone."
"Of course he does!" Jace joked as he kissed her stomach.
"Excuse me!" she responded, "what exactly is that supposed to mean?" She tried to pretend to be insulted, but couldn't. She could never be even the slightest bit upset with him about anything. He made it too easy to love him.
Jace moved away from her stomach, pulling her shirt back down before laying his head on her shoulder.
"Vada Darlin'," he started, looking into her eyes.
"Baby?" she said, caressing his chin, kissing him gently on the end of his nose.
He looked back into her eyes, the intensity of his loving gaze piercing straight to her heart.
"Vada Darlin',I love you. So much." He pulled his body as close to her's as he could, wrapping his arms around her gently. Kissing her face and neck,he continued to whisper how much he loved her.
"I love you Jace." Vada choked through the tears falling down her face. "We..." she took his hand, laying it atop her stomach, "We love you Jace. More than I could ever explain."
Turning away from her briefly,Jace reached into the night table drawer on the far side of the bed, pulling out a small box. He sat up in the bed, then helped Vada to do the same. He sat in front of her, tears pouring as he took her hand in his.
"Vada." he said, his voice shaking. "Marry me Vada. Please." He opened the tiny box to reveal a solitare diamond ring. "Will you marry me?"
"Jace." she sobbed, nodding her head as he took the ring from the box and placed it on her finger. "Yes,baby, yes." She reached out, taking his face in her hands, kissing him passionately.
The couple spent the remainder of the night wrapped up in each other, figuring out the details for their life together. They decided on a wedding date as soon as possible, before she gave birth so their son would have Jace's last name. Their son, because Jace wanted so desperately to be the baby's father figure, even if he couldn't be his father biologically. They chose the name Brandon Robert, names taken from those of each of their maternal grandfathers.
"You can be his daddy Jace." she told him, "He doesn't even have to know."

The sun set lazily over the freshly groomed grounds of Sonnier-Monroe Manor. The ever approaching dark of the crisp May night made the soft light of the dozens of paper lanterns hanging throughout the backyard and deck all the more romantic. White roses and lilies wrapped in soft pink satin ribbon added to the ambience of the evening's events. An intimately small ceremony, the wedding lasted a little more than forty-five minutes before the couple was pronounced Mister and Misses. In attendance were the closest of family and friends, including Vada's parents and siblings as well as Jace's. Also present, the couple's dearest friend Leondrae and her fiance Terrell Watts. As the brisk May evening wound to a close, conversation filled the air. "The ceremony was gorgeous." Liz,Jace's mother, said to Sheila. "It was wonderful. They look so happy." Kira beamed. Seemingly oblivious to everyone's goings on were the bride and groom. Lost within each other, the excitedness of the group went unnoticed. "Was it everything you dreamed of?" Jace asked his new wife. "Jace," Vada beamed, reaching down to stroke her husband's hand, "it was more that I could have ever wished for." The feeling of the wedding ring around Jace's finger and the meaning behind it,the commitment he made not only to her but to the child she was about to bring into the world, brought her to tears. "This has been...." she hesitated, fighting for her words as she was overcome with emotion. "This has been the most amazing day of my entire life. I don't know what I did to deserve you." "I love you Vada Darlin'," he smiled, pressing his face against hers, "I love you so much!" Vada felt tears run off of his face and down her neck, "I just can't believe you're my wife. I can't." *********************************************** Vada yawned as discretely as possible in hope that Jace would not notice. "Alright you," he said, looking over to her before getting up from the couch where he sat beside her, "I think that means it's time for bed my love." "Why?" Vada protested, "I'm not even tired....Jace I swear!" She giggled as he pulled her to her feet. "Don't make me have to carry you up those stairs! I'll do it!" he demanded playfully. "Fine!" she huffed, "Whatever you say Mr. Bomar!" "That's what I though Mrs. Bomar!" Jace leaned in,kissing her gently on her lips before escorting her up the stairs to their bedroom. In the room,he held her hand as she slowly lowered herself onto the bed. Once she was seated and as comfortable as possible he went over to the closet, coming out with a white tank top and a pair of purple striped pajamas for her to change into. Jace then helped his wife undo the buttons on her white, silk dress and pulled it up over her head. He stepped away briefly to hang the dress in the closet, then made his way back to the bedside. Upon returning,he sat down on the bed beside her and unfastened the hooks on her bra, kissing her gently along her neck and onto her shoulders as she pulled away the straps. Jace sat back for a moment, admiring his wife. "You know," he joked, "this is the first time I've ever seen you anywhere close to nekkid!" he laughed through his sexy Southern drawl, "I'm movin' up in the world!" "UGH! You're a goober, you know that right?!?" she shoved her husband lovingly onto his back on the bed, "Shut up!" She leaned over him, kissing his mouth, pulling him up against her as she rolled onto her back. Kissing her neck,Jace ran his hand down the front of her body, gently cupping her breast as he moved his lips closer and closer to the rapid beating heart pounding inside her chest. The feel of her husband's touch on her skin sent both fire and cold chills running throughout her entire being. A feeling almost overwhelming, tears rolled down her face as her breaths became more and more shallow, her heartbeat more and more intense. Almost a quickly as the moment began,Jace pulled himself away. Despite an obvious longing to make love to his new bride,he controlled himself for the sake of not only her well-being,but that of the unborn child she was carrying. "Baby..." Vada whispered. "Not now." he said, stroking her hair, taking a moment to catch his breath. "I don't want to do anything that might hurt you." "Jace..." she started to protest but then hesitated, knowing deep down that he was right, the baby's health was the most important issue present and they should not do anything to jeopardize it. "You're gonna catch cold." he said, "Let me help you." Pulling her upright he helped her work the tank top over her head and then assisted with the rest of the pajamas before pulling her to her feet. "I thought we were going to bed." Vada stood up,slightly confused. "Let's go upstairs," he suggested, "I want to show you something."

Jace led his new bride up the stairs toward the normally musty, damp attic. To Vada's surprise, and utter delight, the dank scent that greeted her upon crossing the threshold of the closet leading to the old room had dissipated under an aromatic cloud of what she could only describe as....cookies.
"Baby," she turned back behind her in an attempt to face her husband.
"Uh-uh....keep walking!" Jace insited as he quickly turned her back towards the direction of the doorway to the attic.
"Jace......" she laughed out loud at his outright silliness. "I was just gonna ask what the smell was."
"Candle. Nice right? Nothing but the best for my love." his heavenly voice rang up from the stairs behind her, wrapping itself around her mind.
Vada nodded her head,"I like it. Kinda makes me hungry though" she giggled. Jace joined in,laughing as he rubbed the small of her back and continued to escort her up the final stairs to their destination.
In the attic, directly across from the closest set of smaller front windows,Jace had set up a roomy, yet intimately small pallet on the floor. A fluffy down comforter topped with 3 huge pillows and a thin, soft blanket lay in wait for Vada to rest upon it. In the middle of the bedding,a single champagne rose and a small black box were the only accent.
"Baby!" she exclaimed, throwing her arms up around his neck. "Baby,it's......you're....baby,it's wonderful. You're too good to me." She pulled his head closer to hers, kissing along his neck and up to his perfect lips. Jace leaned into her, kissing her back with the same fever that had washed over him before. Just as he had done earlier,he pulled away from her abruptly.
"You need to get off your feet,Darlin' "
Vada reluctantly unwrapped her arms from his neck and let him help her down onto the low-lying bed.
"Lie down, get comfortable," he told her as he prepared to leave the room, "I'll be right back." He kissed her once more and headed off down the stairs back into their bedroom.
Vada picked up the single rose she had slid to the side as she sat down, rolling it along between her fingers. It's distinct scent began to fill the air near her face, intermingling itself with the already present aroma of the candle Jace had lit. She was curious as to what sat hidden within the tiny black box that now sat beside her,but she dare not peek.
Jace returned a few moments later after having changed from his formal clothing into something more suitable for bedtime. Vada felt her heartbeat accelerate to almost dangerous levels as she sat admiring her husband before her, wearing nothing more than a pair of blue striped pajama pants. She studied his body with her eyes for the first time ever as he sat himself down beside her. As soon as he was close enough to be within her reach, her trembling hands found their way onto his bare chest. Again, she leaned into him, kissing him passionately as she explored the texture of his skin beneath her hands. He pulled her body into his arms, the heat of him radiating throughout her as the embraced. She felt her mind racing as her hands slowly,as if in an attempt to fool him into thinking it wasn't happening, made their way to his hips. Her fingers slipped below the waistband of his pants just as he was pulling himself away from her yet again.
"Jace," she exclaimed, her voice breathy and longing, "what's it gonna hurt? If we make love tonight, what's it gonna hurt? I want to feel you so badly...."
"Vada Darlin',please don't think I don't want you too. I really......really want you right now. But......" he hesitated, reaching down to rub her stomach. "For Brandon....I think we should wait. I don't want to do anything that could hurt him." He leaned in,kissing her lips slowly as she ran her fingers up into his curly, dark hair.
After a few moments nowhere near long enough,Jace sat back. He looked around the small area where they sat.
"What's you lose baby?" Vada asked him after observing the confused look on his beautiful face.
"Little black box," he said. "I thought I put it down here before we came up..."
"Oh. I moved it," she pointed in the direction where she had moved the small container, "I almost sat on it,so I put it over there out of the way."
Jace leaned over her and grabbed it from where she had set it on the floor. He looked it over once...twice.....looking up at her each time,as if hesitant to hand it to her.
"This is......." he started, looking down at the floor, "your birthday present."
"Oh." she sighed.
"I....I was gonna give it to you....that night." his voice cracked ans he thought back to the events that had ruined one of the most important days of her life, "but......"
"Baby please." she choked through tears, "I know. Please don't say it."
"I'm sorry Darlin'. I'm so sorry." he wrapped his arms around her once again, "I didn't mean to upset you. I'm so sorry."
"No no love." she reassured him, "it's okay. I'm okay." She rubbed the back of his neck affectionately as she serched for a change of subject. "So....what's in the box anyway?"
"OH!" he exclaimed, "sorry....brain ceased fuction for a sec there." Embarassed slightly,he handed the small, velvet covered box into her waiting hand. He rubbed her back, softly caressing her neck with his chin as she opened the gift.
"Baby!" she reached up,taking his face in her free hand, "It's beautiful...so beautiful." Inside the box was a beautifully ornate silver pendant on an equally exquisite chain. A small butterfly wrapped elegantly by a single letter 'V',a small pink stone hanging from the end of the letter.
"You really like it?" he asked,a hint of eagerness in his voice.
"Jace. It's gorgeous. I absolutely love it." she looked deeply into her husband's bright eyes. "It's perfect....everything. This is perfect. I'm the luckiest girl on the planet. You're.....too amazing. Incredible baby."
"I love you,Vada."
The words flowed from his lips as he wrapped his arm around the front of her body, helping her lie back onto the pillow behind her.
"Do you need anything my love?"
Vada thought for a minute, "Cake! I need cake."
Jace couldn't help but laugh as he got up from the floor, "I'll be right back. Would you like some milk too?"
"Uh-huh." Vada smiled and nodded her head. "Thank you baby."
Jace kissed his wife one more time,on her forehead, before leaving out of the room for the final time of the night. His footsteps echoed down the staircase and into the bedroom, then disappeared into the darkness of the smaller stairway.
Vada sat alone, her mind dancing back and forth between her inability to comprehend how happy she was and the always underlying fear that came with being in the attic. Jace's kiss,as innocent as it was,had brought Lucinda back to the frontline of her thoughts. She was the last "person" to have kissed Vada so gently upon the forehead, the night she showed her the vision of Brandon. Lucinda herself had remained illusive since that night and as much as Vada hated herself for feeling it,she was happy that way. It didn't bother her at all that Lucinda wasn't calling on her anymore. Yes she was grateful for her,for stopping her from doing something so stupid, but she just could not shake the initial fear that had instilled itself deep within every fiber of her upon their first frightening encounter.

The sound of Jace's footsteps on the stairs jolted Vada out of her semi-dazed state and back into reality. She shook her head, snapping the visions back into the recesses of her mind. Blinking her eyes, she focused on the doorway just as Jace stepped into the room, cake in one hand and a tall glass of milk in the other. Vada smiled up at him as he entered.
"You happy to see me?......Or this cake?" he joked with her.
"Ugh! Jace Robert Bomar!" she played offended, "Now you know damn good and well I love you...." her arms crossed across her chest as she looked away from him bashfully. "Now gimme the cake....I'm hungry!"
"You!" Jace playfully scolded his wife.
"Brandon is having a one-man dance party, literally on my stomach" she informed him, "he wants that cake more than I do!"
Jace handed her the plate as he sat back down on the floor next to her. He peered across the huge room that surrounded him, observing the surroundings inbetween glances back at Vada as she ate.
"Darlin'," he started, his voice deeply inquisitive, "lemme ask you something okay?"
"Sure baby. What's up?"
"I can't help but notice," he said, motioning around the room with his left hand, "all that in the corner back there. The wardrobe and stuff. That's older right? Like, from before y'all moved in?"
Unwilling to speak with a mouthful of wedding cake,Vada simply nodded her head.
"But...aside from that stuff there, nothing is really in this room."
Vada nodded once again,a little more than confused as to the direction of her husband's line of questioning.
"Right. So what I'm wondering really...." he licked his lips, biting down on the bottom one before continuing his inquiry. He pointed toward the direction his eyes had been drawn to more than once since coming up into the attic, "Why.....is there a huge,expensive-looking rug in the middle of an empty room no one ever goes in?"
It suddenly dawned on Vada as her husband sat silently, waiting for her to soothe to his nagging curiousity. She had never explained it to him,the strange experiences she had had in this room, the sometimes frightening encounters with Lucinda....a ghost from the home's past. She huffed slightly, not sure as to exactly what she was going to tell him, what she could tell him without sounding completely insane. She put down the plate and took one more long drink of the milk beside her then tried (keyword being 'tried') to get up. As always,Jace was immediately on his feet, assisting her to hers before she knew it.
Once she was standing and stable Vada began the,at this particular moment, exhausting task of walking across the room to the very much expensive oriental thrown on the floor near the window. Completely unsure of how her husband was going to react to what she about to reveal to him,Vada shook nervously as she stepped carefully to the edge of the rug.
"Vada Darlin',are you alright?" Jace asked, alarm raising the octave of his voice as he spoke.
"I'm fine baby." she assured him. She looked him right in his face, seeing the worry written all throughout his captivating eyes. "Jace,it's okay. This is just....weird," she hesitated, "I dunno how you're gonna react to this and all.....I don't want it to scare you or something."
"Scare me?" He repeated,a look of utter confusing taking place of the worry in his face.
Vada kicked up the corner of the rug closest to her right foot, revealing the end of the horrendous blood stain that marked the floorboards below.
"What the f**k!?!" Jace jumped back, started by what he'd seen. He looked at Vada,a wild sense of fear and astonishment in his eyes. "Baby! What happened? Did......is......is that blood? That looks like blood."
"Help me sit down baby." Vada reached for her husband's arm in assitance as she lowered herself to the floor next to the rug. "I'll explain everything......well,everything I can. You're gonna think I'm crazy when I'm done,I warn you now."
For nearly 3 hours they sat,Vada telling her stories,Jace listening with a morbid facination not even he could understand. She told him everything....the first visit from Lucinda, the tragic end of the family who had once owned the home in times past,everything....all the way to the supernatural rantings of her great-aunt Carolina at the family reunion years ago before her birth. She told him everything she could remember,no matter how small the detail or how insane it sounded. When she finished her tale, she searched Jace's face for some kind of reaction to what had just been laid upon him.
"Great....now he thinks I'm crazy" she thought to herself, nearly in tears.
"My love....." Jace took her face in his hand, "what's wrong? You're crying."
"You think I'm crazy don't you?" she asked. "Honestly. Tell me."
"Vada," he moved as close as he could to her, cradling her body in his arms, "that was.....the strangest thing I've ever heard in my life. But I do not,for one second, doubt a single word of what you just told me. I could see...see it in your eyes, hear it in your voice. You can't fake emotion like that. I believe you,and no...I don't think you're crazy. Not in the least bit." He kissed her gently on her forehead then slowly got to his feet, helping her up onto hers.
Lying down next to each on their make-shift bed of down,Jace wrapped himself around Vada's body as close as his own body would allow. No matter how close he got,it just wasn't enough. The aching feeling of longing to be a part of him was still almost unbearable to her. She turned to face him, burrying her face into his chest and kissing him softly.
"I love you Vada." he whispered as they both slowly drifted towards sleep.
"I love you too Jace."
Right before falling completely into the clutches of exhaustion something caught Vada's eye. For only a split second, she was there. Lucinda stood over the couple, smiling. For the very first time since they had first met all those months ago,Vada was unafraid. A smile crossed her lips as she dirfted to sleep.

A shock of intense pain ripped Vada from her peacful sleep. She winced, crying out loud in agony. Jace, pulled from dreams by his wife's cries, wrapped his arm across her body. "Vada Darlin',what's wrong my love?" Fear rushed the color from his face as he looked down at her....sweating,short of breath, tears rolling down her cheeks. "Baby........." she managed to mutter between sobs, "ba.......Brandon......something......it's wrong. Jace." The jolting pain eminated throughout her entire body, rendering her nearly paralyzed. "Jace....something.....is wrong.....with Brandon." The level of pain on Vada's face rocked Jace to his very core. He couldn't bear it.....his heart ripping from his chest as he tried to help her in any way he could to alleviate the pain. After one of many failed attempts to get her off the floor,he changed his stradegy. "Vada Darlin'! I'll be.....I'll go get help! Please, don't move my love! I'll get help!" Kira stirred in her bed, unable to fully graps if the knocking she was hearing was in fact real,or lingering from a dream long forgotten. After a few moments in a daze it became clear to her the knocking, growing more and more frantic with every pass, was definitely real. Climbing out of bed,she pulled on her robe. Almost furious with whomever was pounding, she yanked open the door. "Jace!" Reading the expression of fear on her new brother-in-law's face was more than enough to run the anger from her tone. "Jace.....honey what's wrong?" "Vada!" he managed to choke. "Vada.....the baby! Kira they're in trouble!" "Slow down, slow down! What do you mean in trouble? Jace...what is wrong?" she tried desperately to get a straight answer out of the panic stricken man before her. "What happened?" She was already tying her robe closed and heading toward her sister's bedroom before she got the question out of her mouth. "I don't know...."he told her, growing more and more anxious with every breath he took. "She just woke up.....crying. She's hurting....really bad. Kira, she's in pain! I think the baby's coming!" "Jace!" she stopped abruptly and turned face him, "the baby can't be coming! It's too soon! She's still got......more than four weeks......." her voice trailed off as he did the math in her head. "It can't be time." The fact that Vada still had more than four weeks left of her pregnancy was cause for even more concern in Jace. He knew from attending all the classes with Vada that a child can be born healthy at 36 weeks, but it was still early enough to develop problems. Problems for the baby....problems for her. Since the day he found out about her pregnancy,Jace had an underlying fear instilled in his heart......fear of losing her. The only woman he had ever, would ever love. The though of her being taken from him was too much for him to handle. How would he be able to go on with his life without her in it? How would he be able to live......without his life? Vada's agonizing cries broke through the morbid mass of thoughts boiling in his head. "Vada Darlin'! We're coming!" he called to her as he and her sister climbed the stairs to her assistance. "Vada! Sweetie....are you alright?" Kira called to her. "Vada....talk to me!" They found her laying on her back, hands on her stomach....breath so erratic it was nearly absent. Jace rushed to be at her side, trying everythign he could to bring her any kind of relief from the misery she was enduring. Despite his best efforts, nothing worked. Tears rolled down his face as he held her, completely helpless, wathcing her go through the ordeal alone. "Darlin'," he pleaded with her,"tell me what you need! Tell me what I need to do....to make this stop!" "Jace. Move." Kira demanded sharply as she fell inot his place next to her sister. "Let me see what I can do." Within only a few seconds it became painfully clear to her it was out of her hands. "Jace.....call 911. Now! She needs an ambulance." ************************************************** Within twenty minutes Vada was lying on a hard, ungiving bed in one of the many generically beige rooms that filled the local hospital. A cardiac monitor strapped around her stomach read the baby's heartbeat whicle the one on her chest monitored her own. Jace stood by her side, holding her hadn so tightly his own knuckles were white. It killed him....seeing her in such pain, pain so evident in her amazing eyes there was no way she could hide it,despite her best efforts. She held back the tears that tried to force their way through, wanting so desperately to hid her agony from the man she loved. His pain, caused by her pain, was overwhelming her. Exhausted and weak to the point she could barely move an inch,Vada lay back in the bed and prayed. Soon after her arrival,Dr. Harris had come in and checked her out. "Miss...Bomar is it now? Congratulations love." he had said, the same loving tone in his voice as was present every time she'd seen him. "I'm afraid there is nothing we can do at this point.....to stop the labor." He explained in the most compassionate of way a doctor can, "Sometimes....these things just happen. And there is nothing we can do to stop them." He looked at Vada,Jace, then back at Vada. "Lucky for you,the pregnancy is far enough along that we will be able to have a sucessful delivery with minimal complications....if any at all." Funny....how doctors seem to think they can predict the outcome of everything, and then end up being horribly wrong.

Vada sat countless hours, watching the minutes drag by,enduring the worst pain she'd ever felt in her life. The small, uninviting room of the hospital was filled with the back and forth of her doctor as well as half of the Maternity Ward nursing staff. It seemed every time she felt as though comfort was within her grasps, another nurse would come in...poking and prodding....and her tiny ounce of peace was gone. The in and out of so many different people made her head spin. The one constant she had, aside form the pain, was Jace by her side. He had been literally standing by her side for hours, not a complaint coming out of him about being uncomfortable or tired. The only time he did complain was when a nurse would come in,disturb Vada's rest, but do nothing to assist in alleviating the pain she was in. "Mr Bomar." a petite,red-haired nurse appropriately surnamed Pettit breathed at him after her tenth or so encounter with his barage of questioning, "We are doing everything we can to keep your wife as comfortable as possible." she reassured him again, "there's nothing more I can do. Please....calm down." "Look,Ma'am....I'm sorry. I just......." he apologized, "I just don't like seeing her in pain like this." "Honey I understand that. It's natural for you to want to comfort her when she needs it...." she started, stepping out of the room momentarily to retrieve a stool for Jace to sit on, "But sometimes all you can do is sit back....and let nature take it's course. You've got to have faith that things will be alright." Jace nodded, closing his eyes before resting his head on the edge of Vada's tiny bed. After a brief moment he stood up straight again, taking the stool from where Nurse Pettit had set it beside him and sat down. "How long have you two been married?" she asked him. "Yesterday." he replied. His eyes beamed as he looked his wife over while he spoke, taking her hand in his, kissing it gently. "We've only known each other for about a year, but I have never in my life loved anyone the way I do her. She's my everything." He leaned down, once again kissing her hand as she slept as restfully as she could have been in the past hours of her ordeal. "She looks like an angel doesn't she?" "She's a beautiful girl." Nurse Pettit agreed, rubbing his back for a brief moment before turning to leave out of the room. "Hit the call button if you need me." Jace steadied himself on the stool, resting his head beside Vada as she slept and waited....... ************************************************** The buzzer behind the desk of the Nurse's Station began ringing. It's loud, piercing whine eminating throughout the small lobby of the Maternity Ward. "Bomar. Room 22." one of the nurses responded. Nurse Kennedy rose from her place behind the desk and made her way into the room to assist. The she got closer to the room, the sound of Vada's cries filled her ears and sent alarm washing over her. She quickened her pace, entering the room and immediately stepping in to Vada's assitance. She turned back toward the door and shouted to the desk, "Page Doctor Harris." she amnnounced the anyone close enough the hear her. "The baby's coming. Something's not right." Jace stood next to his wife, his entire body shaking with fear and exhaustion. "She just.......she just woke up crying. She started screaming." His expression was blank,as though shock had draped itself over him. "I....I don't know.......what's wrong." Vada's cries escallated from once every few minutes to once every few seconds. "Vada Darlin'!" Jace cried, pressing his face close to hers, "Hang in their my love. It's gonna be okay." her tried to console her as tears poured down his face. Dr. Harris was in the room within minutes of receiveing the page from Nurse Gayle at the Nurse's Station. This time, unlike his previous visits, his expression was stern and matter of fact as he stepped into place to examine Vada's progess. "He's going breech." he stated methodically, almost cold. "We have to turn him,or we could lose them both. Mr. Bomar,I need you to step away please." "No no no.....no no please! Please!" Jace pleaded with anyone who would listen. "Please! Don't let her die.....don't let her die,I need her!" "Mr. Bomar, calm down!" a nearby nurse unknown to him scolded. "You have to stay calm. Panicking her right now is not the best thing to do." Dr. Harris and his staff of nurses worked with all of their efforts to ensure the safety of both Vada and her soon to be newborn son throughtout the remainder of the trying delivery. Eternity seemed an understatement when trying to describe how long Vada felt she pushed, fighting with every inch of her to do what the doctor was telling her...to ensure the safety of her child. Finally, after what seemed a miniature lifetime,a tiny baby boy emerged from the pain. Relief swept over Vada's ever muscle and bone as she watched them handle her son. The relief was soon replaced by overwhelming panic when she realized her newborn infant was not breathing,no sound escaping his fragile body. Dr. Harris had swiftly taken the child over to the other end of the room where a crash cart had been waiting, ready for worst case senario. The minutes dragged by....the terrified young mother and her husband could do nothing but cry,and pray. Vada clung to Jace as he sat beside her, shaking and sobbing. Prayer ran wild through her mind as she waited to hear her baby's cries. The thought of losing her son was far too devastating for her to even comprehend. She knew she would die without her child. Jace knew she would die without her child, and without her...would die himself. An entire family's life swayed in the balance as time ticked by. A high pitched, piercing squeal rang throughout the corridors of the hospital ward as the newborn announced his presence to the world. "Oh God!" Jace exclaimed. "Lord...thank you." He prayed aloud as Brandon's cries filled the room. He embraced his wife so tightly his arms ached, but he refused to let go. "Jace." Vada looked over at her husband, "baby, look at him." Nurse Kennedy had stepped up beside the bed where they sat, young Brandon in her arms. "He's.......so beautiful......." Vada cried, unable to control the flood of emotion pouring from her heart. She turned to Jace, kissing him gently as Nurse Kennedy lay the newborn in her arms. "Hi my baby." she beamed at her child, "Hi Brandon. I'm your mommy. You're so perfect." Jace stroked her hair as tears ran down her face. "This is your daddy." "Hey munchkin." Jace smiled at Brandon over Vada's shoulder, "I'm so happy to finally meet you." He reached down, stroking his son's head. Neither Vada nor Jace could stop smiling over the amazing little boy she held in her arms. Even with the constant shuffle of people in and out of the room,Vada had eyes for no one but they two most important men in her life. She watched from the bed as Jace held their son in his arms, rocking him slowly back and forth,a lullaby flowing from his lips. "I don't understand...." Vada thought to herself, "I just don't understand how anything could be so....perfect." At that moment in time,Vada's life was just that.....perfect.

The six weeks or so that followed were a complete blur. Vada and Jace spent 92% of their time at the hospital with Brandon, who was being help in the neonatal intensive care unit at the hospital for evaluation. The specialist had found a tiny arrythmia with Brandon's heart and she wanted to be absolutely sure of it's significance before releasing him to go home. Vada herself had been discharged from the care of the hospital after shortly more than two weeks. Her own blood pressure had skyrocketed after the birth causing a few minor problems, nothing seriously complicated. Every day since her release,Vada and Jace made the trip to the hospital to spend time with their baby. They held him,fed him, changed him,all under the watchful eye of the medical staff. "Mr. & Mrs. Bomar," Dr.Harris approached the two of them as they sat with the baby one morning in early July, "I've talked with Dr. Curtis and we both feel that everything is in order. We think it's time you can bring your little man home." ************************************************** "Hey guys! We're home!" Jace called into the foyer as he opened the front door of the Manor, letting his wife and son pass through before him. No sooner than he could get the door closed behind him, they were greeted by the entire family who had been waiting eagerly for their arrival. "Welcome home Baby!" Kira called out as she approached her sister and nephew. "I wanna hold him!" She exclaimed gleefully. "Kira!" Russell stepped up behind his daughter, "Let you sister sit down first will you?" "Sorry daddy." Kira looked away blushing like a little girl caught in the cookie jar. "I'm just so excited to see them all home!" "I know baby." Russell led Vada to the living room and helped her sit down on the couch, sitting beside her once she was situated with Brandon in her arms. He brushed her hair from her eyes, kissing her forehead, "I'm glad you're both home now baby." "Me too daddy. Me too." The entire household was humming for the remainder of the day, well into the night hours.Everyone had the same questions for Vada, "Are you feeling alright?" "Can I hold him?" Vada felt almost overwhelmed by the attention she was getting. Never in her life was she the center of attention, not like this. She was by no means ungrateful for it,just unprepared. This was a new, happier kind of attention she'd not experienced before from anyone. Anyone aside from Jace. After several hours of socializing with everyone in the house and the dozen or so visitors who had come calling Vada was to the point of exhaustion. Jace peered deeply into her eyes, seeing the signs of fatigue welling in them. "C'mon Darlin'," he wrapped his arms around her body and pulled her to her feet, "you need to get some rest. You look exhausted." Vada said goodnight to everything as Jace pulled her in the direction of the stairs. "Baby..." she stopped abruptly, "What about Brandon? I think it's past his bedtime too." "I know I know." He said as he continued to usher her in the direction of the bedroom. "He can hang out for a little while longer,I don't think anyone will complain. I'll come back and get him once you're settled." In the bedroom,Vada collapsed down onto the bed. "I told you!" Jace laughed, shaking his head. "Shut up!" Vada playfully threw a pillow at his head. "I see how you're gonna be!" Jace harped, turning away. "BABY!" Vada whined. "Don't.......baby,come here." She held her arms up for her husband to fall into them. He sat close, pulling her body into his lap. Her fingers instincitvely wrapped themselves in his curly brown hair as she brushed her nose against his. "I love you,you know." he stared deep into her green eyes, caressing her face. "I love you too." she managed to reply between feverish kisses to his lips and neck. "I love you so much.....I can't even explain. Jace........" She felt herself growing breathless as the longing for her husband boiled deep inside her. "Get comfortable love. I think you need some sleep." Jace moved her from where she was sitting across his hips and laid her back onto the bed. She moaned in disapproval as he got up and walked away, disappearing into the closet. "I heard that!" he laughed back in her direction. "Excuse me?" She poked back at him. "I have no idea what the hell you're talking about." "Uh-huh.....keep tellin' yourself that love!" Jace joked as he came back out fo the closet,Vada's pajamas in his hand. "So what, you're gonna undress me again?" she inquired shyly. "Yes." he answered, matter of fact, "Yes I am. Is there a problem with that Mrs. Bomar?" "No." Vada rolled onto her stomach giggling. She felt Jace climb into the bed next to her,his hand sliding beneath the back of her shirt. He pushed it up just enough that to cool wind of the house's air-conditioning unit caused goosebumps to pop up across her skin. His lips pressed into the base of her spine, working their way up her back. A soft moan escaped her lips as he pulled her up from the bed. "Don't stop.....Jace please." Jace wrapped himself behind his wife, the heat of his skin burning through his clothing as he removed his shirt. "Are you sure? I don't want to do anything if you aren't ready." "Yes......baby please. I can't wait any longer.I need you." she moaned. His hands searched her body over her clothes as his mouth explored her neck and shoulders. His skin nearly scorched her own as he pulled her shirt from her body, pressing his bare chest tightly into her back. With ever brush of his lips, every pass of his hands,Vada felt her composure crumble. She turned herself to face him,the weight of her body resting upon his hips. Her breasts just within reach of his mouth. Tears ran down her face as his warm kiss journeyed slowly down the front of her body, reaching the waistline of her jeans as he lay her back down onto the bed. The buttons fell open, making way for his hands to explore. "BABY!" she cried out, overwhelmed by the rush stemming from the touch. Jace looked into her eyes, trying to read her reaction. "Yes?" he asked of her once more. Vada pulled his hips down into hers, wrapping her body as tightly around his as she could. "Yes. Baby.....yes. I want you. Take me.....now."
